Before answering these questions analytically, notice what your body already knows about where your system is. The felt sense often arrives before the evidence.

Pioneer
Is the core identity documented? Can you say what this is?
  • The system has no shared documentation of what it is
  • Different participants describe it differently
  • The founder holds the identity alone
  • There is no artifact someone could read and use without the founder present

Appropriate work: documentation, identity clarification, first deposits. Build soil before planting.

Inappropriate work: complex exchange, governance structures, scaling. These are climax processes forced into pioneer conditions.

Suggested practice: Differentiation — state one position you actually hold, in one sentence. Pioneer work is identity work.
Early
Has genuine exchange occurred? Did both parties update?
  • Identity is documented but untested by external contact
  • First exchanges have happened, but you cannot tell which were genuine
  • The system has had agreement but not resonance
  • Small-group trust is forming but fragile

Appropriate work: small genuine exchanges, trust deposits, testing contact. Find out what transfers.

Inappropriate work: scaling, formalization, complex governance. The system doesn’t yet know what it’s scaling.

Suggested practice: Connection — identify one exchange where something actually landed. Early succession tests genuine exchange.
Mid
Can the system self-correct without the founder? Are limits visible?
  • Exchange is genuine but the system cannot correct course without one person
  • Limits exist but are not stated — they operate as unspoken norms
  • The system has no feedback mechanism that operates when the founder is absent
  • Growth is happening but self-regulation is not

Appropriate work: self-correction protocols, distributed holding, pattern propagation. Make the limits visible as information.

Inappropriate work: premature optimization, rigid formalization. The system needs to learn to regulate, not to be regulated.

Suggested practice: Boundaries — name one limit you are currently hiding. Mid-succession requires visible limits for self-correction.
Climax
Has the system produced seed instances? Can it propagate?
  • Feedback loops operate without the founder
  • The system has produced something that functions independently
  • New instances emerge from the pattern, not from the person
  • Full circulation: the system receives as much as it gives

Appropriate work: propagation, seeding new instances, full circulation. What persists is the architecture, not the architect.

Inappropriate work: hoarding, defending territory, resisting succession. Climax systems that refuse to seed become monuments.

Suggested practice: Architecture — write down what would still function if you disappeared tomorrow. Climax propagates seed instances.
